On Thursday, June 3, 2010, Stephen T. Ayers, AIA, LEED AP was sworn in as the 11th Architect of the Capitol by Supreme Court Chief Justice John Roberts, Jr., in the Old Senate Chamber of the U.S. Capitol.
"It was a great honor to take the Oath of Office from Chief Justice Roberts in a room with so much historical significance," said Mr. Ayers. "This is one of my favorite spaces in the Capitol, and it was designed by one of my favorite architects, Benjamin Henry Latrobe."
Stephen T. Ayers had served as Acting Architect, heading up the 2,600-person Office of the Architect of the Capitol, since February 2007. On February 24, 2010, President Obama officially nominated him to be the next Architect of the Capitol and the United States Senate confirmed him, by unanimous consent, on May 12, 2010. On May 13,2010, the President officially appointed Mr. Ayers to a 10-year term as Architect of the Capitol.
The Architect of the Capitol is appointed for a 10-year term by the President, with the advice and consent of the Senate. Upon confirmation by the Senate, the person serving as Architect becomes an official of the Legislative Branch as an Officer of Congress. The Architect is eligible for reappointment to another 10-year term after the completion of his first term.
