On February 14, 2011, the Architect of the Capitol began hydro-demolition work in the East House Underground Garage to remove and replace concrete floor slabs that have deteriorated over the years due to traffic, moisture and road salt.

This effort was part of a comprehensive garage renovation project that began in January, which included upgrading mechanical, electrical, plumbing, and other systems. This renovation will prolong the life expectancy of the garage, provide a safe structure, return its condition to a reliable level of facility maintenance, and help prevent the high cost of total replacement.

The project was completed in January 2012.

In 1967, construction on the House Underground Garage was completed, using 90,000 cubic yards of concrete, 9,000 tons of reinforcing steel and 36,000 cubic feet of granite stone.

The innovative hydro-demolition technique uses highly compressed water to remove the deteriorated concrete, while leaving the reinforcing steel intact.
