"The Oven," the North Wing, and the Connecting Passageway

This 1989 drawing is a conjectural representation. On the right is the Capitol's north wing. On the left is "the oven," a brick structure hastily erected in 1801 as a meeting place for the House of Representatives; it is connected to the north wing by a 145-foot wooden passageway. "The oven" and the passageway were removed in 1804 to make way for the south wing.
