Celebrating the U.S. Exploring Expedition of 1838-42

Saturday, April 13, 10 a.m. to 2 pm. — The U.S. Botanic Garden's plant collection dates back to the U.S. Exploring Expedition of 1838-42. Three of the original plants from this expedition can still be seen on display in the Conservatory! Commanded by Lieutenant Charles Wilkes, this expedition took scientists and sailors on six ships to explore the seven seas. Shoots of Spring Cooking Demonstration

Exhibition Hall Talk

Meet at the entrance to Exhibition Hall on the lower level of the Capitol Visitor Center on Tuesday, April 16 at 1 p.m. for a 15-minute program about Philip Reid, an enslaved laborer who helped cast the Statue of Freedom that stands atop the U.S. Capitol Dome.

Medicinal & Poisonous Plants Tour

This event has already occurred — Many important medicines are derived from plants, but too much of a good thing can be dangerous. During a walking tour of the Conservatory, Beth Burrous will feature poisonous and medicinal plants growing at the U.S. Botanic Garden. She will talk about famous, interesting and sometimes fatal cases of poisoning by plants. You will also see and learn about plants used to make life-saving medicines.

Brumidi Corridors Tours

Weekdays at 2 p.m. — A special tour of the Brumidi Corridors on the first floor of the Senate wing of the Capitol enables visitors to view and learn about the ornate paintings on the walls and ceilings designed by Constantino Brumidi between 1857 and 1859. This tour, which lasts approximately 30 minutes, is offered Monday through Friday at 2 p.m. No reservations are needed. Get passes for this tour at one of the Information Desks on the lower level of the Visitor Center.

Capitol and Congress During the Civil War Tour

Weekdays at 3 p.m. — In honor of the 150th Anniversary of the Civil War, a special tour, lasting 30 to 45 minutes, entitled "Capitol and the Congress During the Civil War," is offered Monday through Friday at 3 p.m. With stops at the Old Supreme Court Chamber and other important areas at the Capitol, this tour will explore how the Capitol was used during the Civil War, critical debates that took place during the Civil War, and key judicial decisions made during this time period.
