Statue of Freedom

Tuesday, April 16, 1 p.m.Philip Reid was an enslaved laborer who helped cast the Statue of Freedom that stands atop the Capitol Dome. By December 2, 1863 when Freedom was lifted into place, Reid was a free man under the DC Compensated Emancipation Act of 1862. In recognition of DC Emancipation Day, join Dr. Barbara Wolanin, curator for the Architect of the Capitol, as she talks about Reid and his unique story. Meet at the entrance to Exhibition Hall on the lower level of the Capitol Visitor Center for this 15-minute program. No reservations or passes needed.
