Celebrating the U.S. Exploring Expedition of 1838-42

Saturday, April 13, 10 a.m. to 2 pm. — The U.S. Botanic Garden's plant collection dates back to the U.S. Exploring Expedition of 1838-42. Three of the original plants from this expedition can still be seen on display in the Conservatory! Commanded by Lieutenant Charles Wilkes, this expedition took scientists and sailors on six ships to explore the seven seas. The New Blue Concert at the U.S. Botanic Garden

This event has already occurred — Come to the U.S. Botanic Garden and hear The New Blue, Yale's oldest all-female a cappella group! The New Blue was founded the first year that Yale admitted undergraduate women and has prided itself on an eclectic repertoire and innovative musical spirit ever since. The group is visiting the DC area this week as part of its spring East Coast tour. Join them for a rousing lunchtime set in the lushness of the Conservatory's Garden Court. January 22 to October 14 — Spring ephemerals of the forest understory are among the most interesting of our wildflowers. The photography of Jackie Bailey Labovitz celebrates the short-lived flowers of perennial native plants that bloom beneath the forest canopy. During a brief window of opportunity, they arise from the ground after it thaws and bloom, taking advantage of the sunlight beaming through the leafless trees. Medicinal & Poisonous Plants Tour

This event has already occurred — Many important medicines are derived from plants, but too much of a good thing can be dangerous. During a walking tour of the Conservatory, Beth Burrous will feature poisonous and medicinal plants growing at the U.S. Botanic Garden. She will talk about famous, interesting and sometimes fatal cases of poisoning by plants. You will also see and learn about plants used to make life-saving medicines.
