The West House Underground Garage (WHUG) Interior Rehabilitation project will replace the deteriorated structural concrete and upgrade the fire protection, mechanical, electrical and plumbing systems. The structural repairs will be completed using the hydro-demolition method which uses high-pressured water to blast through deteriorated concrete. This method exposes the concrete to a specified depth and also allows the replacement of corroded reinforcing steel. Along with architectural, parking and special needs enhancements, the rehabilitation of the WHUG will also include the proper removal and disposal of hazardous materials.
Energy efficiency is a major element in the WHUG project and the design employs the use of a new LED lighting system using sensors, temperature controlled mechanical systems and cost-saving plumbing accessories. The project also incorporates upgrades including new doors, windows, carpets, ceilings and a total painting overhaul of the garage which will provide a cleaner and brighter environment with color-coded level designation, traffic patterns and way-finding signage for future occupants. WHUG construction will also be practicing Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED)-influenced activities such as recycling concrete and steel, providing clean indoor air quality during construction, using materials with high-recycled concrete and steel content, as well as using safer versions of paints and building sealants.
The WHUG project is similar to the East House Underground Garage (EHUG) Interior Rehabilitation project that was completed in December 2011. The EHUG building received a LEED for New Construction Certification at the Gold level for the same practices it will use for the WHUG project.
