The Architect of the Capitol (AOC) performed regular maintenance to slow the deterioration of the Dome, but significant work is needed to preserve it. In 2010, the AOC sealed and painted the Dome as an interim measure to provide a protective coating to help preserve and protect the exterior cast iron surfaces until the Dome Restoration Project could be completed to provide a more permanent solution.

Work to the skirt portion of the Dome, which included removal of old paint, repairs to the cast iron and stone, and repainting, was completed in 2012. Pending approval of funds, the AOC plans to award the next phase of work, which includes the restoration of the exterior and interior face of the Dome shell. Future work includes the restoration of the interstitial space, infrastructure upgrades and the restoration of the Rotunda [2] ironwork and stone surfaces.
