Senate Office Buildings

The first congressional office buildings were constructed immediately after the turn of the century to relieve overcrowding in the Capitol. Previously, members who wanted office space had to rent quarters or borrow space in committee rooms. The Russell Senate Office Building, occupied in 1909, is the oldest of the Senate office buildings, with the Dirksen and Hart Buildings being constructed later to provide additional space for the U.S. Senate.
