House Office Buildings

The first congressional office buildings were constructed immediately after the turn of the century to relieve overcrowding in the Capitol. Previously, members who wanted office space had to rent quarters or borrow space in committee rooms. The Cannon House Office Building, completed in 1908, is the oldest congressional office building, with the Longworth, Rayburn and Ford House Office Buildings being added later to house the growing Congress.
