Sidewalk and Street Repairs
Status: Ongoing Building: Capitol Grounds

Repairs are occurring across Capitol Hill to replace sidewalks, repair gutters and curbs, and pave streets that have reached the end of their serviceable life. Throughout this project signs and other safety devices will direct pedestrians to alternative paths. The map below provides an up-to-date look at current and planned repairs.

Supreme Court West Façade Restoration
Supreme Court West Façade Restoration
Status: Ongoing Building: U.S. Supreme Court

Beginning May 2012 the U.S. Supreme Court Building's West Front Façade began a complete restoration to address deterioration due to age, weather and nature.

Construction at the U.S. Botanic Garden Terrace
U.S. Botanic Garden Terrace Garden Improvements
Status: Ongoing Building: U.S. Botanic Garden

Beginning February 25, 2013, construction work will occur in the U.S. Botanic Garden Conservatory front landscape. A monumental urn will be installed in the central bed of the Terrace gardens, and site work around the urn will connect this bed with previous terrace improvements. The urn will be made of cast aluminum, and is scheduled to arrive in April. The final project will be completed in May. Signage will direct visitors around the work to the main Conservatory entrance which will remain open during the work.

United States Capitol Building
Wireless Communication Upgrades
Status: Ongoing Building: United States Capitol

The AOC is working to increase wireless communication capabilities at the capitol through upgrades to antennas and 4G capabilities. The Capitol Building Electric shop provided the infrastructure necessary to support the new equipment. This work is expected to be completed by Summer 2013.

Conservators work to restore the Zodiac Corridors
Zodiac Corridor Restoration
Status: Ongoing Building: United States Capitol
The “Zodiac Corridor” in the Brumidi Corridors is undergoing restoration for approximately 10 months. When complete the corridor will be reopened for viewing. More »

Capitol Reflecting Pool Clean-up
Capitol Reflecting Pool Spring Cleaning
Status: Completed Building: Capitol Grounds

Starting March 17, 2013 the Capitol Reflecting Pool located at the West Front of the Capitol (east end of the National Mall) will be drained and cleaned as part of regular maintenance performed by the AOC. The work is anticipated to take approximately one week. The Reflecting Pool will be refilled when completed.

Sprinkler installation in the Senate Office Building Subway Tunnel
Fire Protection System Upgrade in Senate Subway Tunnel

Work is underway to provide the United States Senate Subway Tunnel with automatic fire sprinkler protection through the installation of 6,800 linear feet of sprinkler piping and 258 sprinkler heads between all Senate Subway stations.

West House Underground Garage Interior Rehabilitation
Status: Completed Building: House Office Buildings

The West House Underground Garage (WHUG) Interior Rehabilitation project will replace the deteriorated structural concrete and upgrade the fire protection, mechanical, electrical and plumbing systems. The structural repairs will be completed using the hydro-demolition method which uses high-pressured water to blast through deteriorated concrete. This method exposes the concrete to a specified depth and also allows the replacement of corroded reinforcing steel. Capitol Power Plant
Cogeneration Addition at the Capitol Power Plant
Status: Planned Building: Capitol Power Plant
The Architect of the Capitol (AOC) completed a Long Term Strategic Energy Plan for the Capitol Power Plant (CPP), which identified cogeneration as the preferred solution for achieving energy savings, reducing environmental impacts, and maintaining a reliable source of chilled water and steam for Congress and the Supreme Court. The planned Cogeneration Plant at the CPP will use natural gas in a combustion turbine in order to efficiently generate both electricity and heat for steam. More »
