Since its full restoration in 1993, the Statue of Freedom has been washed, caulked, and epoxied and had its protective coating renewed every two to five years, most recently in 2012 (pictured above).

Beginning today, August 14, 2015, scaffolding will be built above the Statue of Freedom's cast-iron pedestal base, beyond the current scaffold currently in place for the Dome Restoration Project.

Work to clean the statue and reapply its coating will begin in September. In addition, the ten lightning points will be unscrewed for sharpening and then reinstalled.

In early October, the scaffolding for the statue's maintenance will be removed.
