Jim Kaufmann

Capitol Grounds and Arboretum
Jim Kaufmann is the AOC Director, Capitol Grounds and Arboretum.

As the Director of Capitol Grounds and Arboretum, Mr. James Kaufmann is responsible for preserving and maintaining more than 280 acres of historic landscape and infrastructure across the U.S. Capitol campus. His jurisdiction performs landscape maintenance, designs and installs seasonal horticultural display beds, implements comprehensive arboricultural programs and maintains and improves the supporting infrastructure, vehicles and equipment. Snow removal, trash collection, recycling and support for major events, such as the annual Christmas Tree Lighting Ceremony, Memorial Day and Capitol Fourth Concerts fall under his jurisdiction's responsibilities.

Mr. Kaufmann began his career with AOC in 2009 as Horticulture Manager for the U.S. Botanic Garden. He joined Capitol Grounds and Arboretum as Deputy Superintendent in 2017 and was selected for his current position in 2018.

Prior to joining the AOC, Mr. Kaufmann worked for nearly 15 years as a horticulturist with the National Gallery of Art. For five of those years he served as the Sculpture Garden Manager, where he led the Gallery to obtain a "Green Star" award from the Professional Grounds Management Society (PGMS). He also gained public garden experience working at Villanova University and at Temple University.

Mr. Kaufmann earned a Master of Science degree in Environmental Science from University of Maryland University College (UMUC) and a Bachelor of Science degree from Temple University. In 2007, he was conferred as a Temple University Alumni Fellow. Mr. Kaufmann is also an International Society of Arboriculture (ISA) certified arborist.
