Plaster repairs underway at the U.S. Capitol

The AOC has identified areas throughout the Capitol that contain historic paint colors or decoration that need restoration. In many of these areas the plaster has cracked under the stress and weight of multiple paint layers, a result of decades of repainting wall and ceiling surfaces. These areas have been marked for paint analysis; a process that allows the AOC to record what finishes were used in the past before repairing the wall. The main entrance and exit doors to the Capitol Visitor Center will be replaced with doors that will be lighter and easier to open for visitors. The installations are scheduled in phases to minimize inconvenience to staff and visitors. During each phase of construction the doors being replaced will be inaccessible, but the remaining entrance and exit doors will be available for use. Temporary barriers will be erected to maintain building security and protect visitors. This project is scheduled to be completed by Inauguration 2017.

Capitol Windows

Status: Completed

Building: United States Capitol

Repairs to the exterior side of the Capitol Building windows located on the House side will be performed between September 2, 2014 through mid-November 2014. The repairs are focused on the exterior side of the windows and some minor work on the interior side will take place during non-operational hours to avoid disruptions to the space occupants. A scaffold system will be used to reach each window and perform the repairs.
