I loved reading this article. Thanks for sharing!
I've been feeding the squirrels between the Capitol and Union Station after every shift since 2020. When the pandemic struck, the bulk of the tourists and staffers disappeared along with the food scraps that made up a portion of their diet. Roasted, unsalted peanuts in the shell seems to make them very happy. There have been days when I've been surrounded by dozens of squirrels and once I even had a squirrel leap and bite my finger amidst the feeding frenzy.
I also try to feed them on my way to and from Union Station and the Capitol. My wife calls me the crazy squirrel guy.
Love this - sweet. I never knew they had such a history!
