Capitol Building Jurisdiction

Capitol Building Jurisdiction

West Olmsted terrace application and removal of poultice to clean marble.

The Capitol Building jurisdiction is entrusted with the care and stewardship of the U.S. Capitol, one of the most iconic and historically significant buildings in the world and the centerpiece of the Capitol campus. The jurisdiction is responsible for carpentry, construction, custodial, electrical, elevator, heating and air conditioning, insulation, labor, masonry, painting, plumbing and sheet metal services. The jurisdiction also manages a flag office and supports special events. The jurisdiction also provides support for programs related to occupational health and safety, sustainability and recycling, energy management and fire detection and protection management, and manages the facility maintenance at the U.S. Capitol Visitor Center (CVC).

The Capitol Building jurisdiction is comprised of a number of shops that include carpentry, electrical, elevator, labor, heating, ventilation, air conditioning, refrigeration, masonry, painting and decorating, plumbing, and sheet metal division, and flag office. These skilled tradespersons and laborers work behind the scenes providing services that include: ensuring a safe and comfortable indoor environment; preserving historic structures; flying flags over the U.S. Capitol; and special events set-up.
