Eugene Poole, an architect Planning and Project Management (PPM) at Architect of the Capitol (AOC), was the keynote speaker at the Phelps Academy of Engineering 2017 Winter Celebration and was presented an award for his unwavering support of the Phelps Architecture, Construction and Engineering High School Mentorship Program.

Poole, who has volunteered and coordinated the AOC presentations every year since 2009, has taught the Five Orders of Architecture, judged the Career Day Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) Fair, represented Engineering day, provided mentorship for the "Shadow an Architect" program and volunteers at the mock job fair each year to help students refine their job interviewing and presentation skills. Poole is a standing invitee for each Phelps graduation and has been fortunate to help inspire the lives of more than 3,000 students over the years. Poole says, “The professional partnership between the Architect of the Capitol and Phelps Charter High School not only provides great mentorship to Phelps students; but also, the results of their learning, refinement and implementation of new skills acquired from AOC professionals are largely beneficial to the entire Washington, D.C., metro community at large."

Martin Shore and Shurmella Aslan from PPM and Edward Kessie from Library Buildings and Grounds also participated in the mentorship program this year. Ed Lopez from Human Capital Management was also presented with an award for his coordination efforts with the Phelps School.
