When the Architect of the Capitol (AOC) does not receive enough funding to pay for all maintenance and repairs required across the U.S. Capitol campus, work gets deferred due to budget constraints.

The failure to take care of major repairs and/or restore building components that have reached the end of their useful lives results in a deferred maintenance backlog. Infrastructure that is not properly cared for with scheduled maintenance and timely repair work can become unsightly, unsafe, more susceptible to damage, and can deteriorate more quickly.

Below are the most important maintenance needs for continued successful operation of the buildings and infrastructure across the Capitol campus, with a focus on reliability, safety, maintenance costs and energy conservation.

  • Air handling replacement
  • Fire alarm system replacement
  • Pipe repairs and replacement
  • Roofing repairs and replacement
  • Stone preservation
  • Tunnel maintenance and repairs
  • Water valve repairs
  • Waterproofing replacement

Properly maintained Capitol campus facilities reflect the pride of the nation. The AOC's goal is to address facility needs in an energy efficient and fiscally responsible manner to continue to serve Congress and the Supreme Court, preserve America's Capitol and inspire memorable experiences.
